PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- Brown Health continued paying millions of dollars to its former chief executive during the two years after he resigned as leader of Rhode Island's largest hospital group, a Target 12 investigation has found.

Former CEO Dr. Timothy Babineau, who stepped down in May 2022, received $2 million in severance in 2023 and another $1.3 million in severance in 2024, according to newly filed tax documents and additional information confirmed by Target 12.

Combined with a payment included in his $6.8 million compensation package for 2022, Babineau received a total of nearly $4 million in severance pay from Brown Health, formerly known as Lifespan. Brown Health also paid Babineau more in 2023 than its actual CEO that year, John Fernandez, who earned $2.1 million.
