PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Some Rhode Islanders might soon be getting some help with their medical debt.

The Office of the General Treasury is partnering with the nonprofit Undue Medical Debt to create the Medical Debt Relief Initiative (MDRI).

The program is made possible through a $1 million allocation from the R.I. General Assembly.

State leaders say there's no added cost to taxpayers, and residents won't have to lift a finger to receive the relief if they are eligible.

"This initiative will allow folks to take a deep breath, get back on their feet and continue producing for the state of Rhode Island," Treasurer James Diossa said.

The nonprofit is using the $1 million from the state to pay off the medical debts of those who are struggling.
