The transformation of a once-problematic motel in Birmingham has revived old concerns. The USA Economy Lodge on Crestwood Boulevard was an extended stay motel. Nearly four years ago, the city of Birmingham made moves to revoke the business license for the motel because it was a hotspot for crime. Birmingham police said they investigated reports of drug dealing, prostitution, human trafficking and a homicide there. In 2021, that motel had more than 150 calls to police for service in a six-month time span. It was eventually forced to shut down.
