SPRINGFIELD TWP., Ohio (WKBN) -- Springfield Township's fire department is asking for voters help, as a new levy on the ballot this November could determine the future of the township's fire and EMS services.

Two years ago, the department made a historic change, switching for all volunteers to be paid part-time staff.

The move was made possible by tapping into long-held savings, but now those funds are running low.

The township is asking voters to approve a new 3.5 mill operation levy. If the new effort fails, the department will have to consider cutting staffing or reducing services.

"Obviously, using savings as time goes on, it dwindles down. So, to keep that going, that is why we have the levy on, and hopefully we'll continue staffing," said Springfield Township Fire Chief Michael W
