DAVENPORT, Iowa (KWQC) - A Davenport nonprofit that helped revive the city’s Gold Coast is shutting down after more than two decades of work.
The Gateway Redevelopment Group (GRG) will close its Jipp Home & Grocery architectural salvage shop on Gaines Street on Sept. 29, ending a preservation effort that has saved eight historic buildings in the Hamburg Historic District.
“I definitely love old houses, but it’s also my neighborhood. This is where I live and I want to take care of my neighborhood,” said Jack Haberman, president of the Gateway Redevelopment Group.
Founded more than 20 years ago, the all-volunteer group was dedicated to rescuing abandoned and deteriorated homes.
Its first major project was the Jipp itself, an 1868 store and 1878 attached house once slated for demolition.
