Seven women filed federal lawsuits on Wednesday against Logan Correctional Center staff members they accuse of sexually assaulting them while they were incarcerated.
The lawsuits detail how the women were sexually assaulted by correctional and internal affairs officers in broom closets or other areas where the prison staff knew there were no cameras. They also allege that attempts to report the abuse were mostly ignored or resulted in retaliation from prison officials, who are also named in the complaints.
Nicole Schult, the legal director of Uptown People’s Law Center, said the women came forward with their complaints because “every single one of them wants to make sure that this doesn’t happen to other women in custody.”
