SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – During the City of Sioux Falls' August financial report, officials say the city has the lowest unemployment rates in the U.S., nearly a 3% difference from the national unemployment rate.

"You'll see that the national unemployment rate is increasing, and it has been over the last several months," Director of Finance Shawn Pritchett said at Tuesday's informational meeting. "It's currently at 4.6% overall."

At the end of August 2025, there were about 11,000 open jobs in Sioux Falls, but only about 3,100 people were reported as unemployed.

"You continue to see job postings and new job postings declining slightly since Covid, but still significantly more jobs available," Pritchett said.

It's created some challenges for local businesses that are actively hiring.
