It appears the Windsor Spitfires will open the season a little more short-handed than expected.

Nine players headed out to NHL rookie camps last week, but only captain Liam Greentree (Los Angeles Kings), A.J. Spellacy (Chicago Blackhawks) and Jack Nesbitt (Philadelphia Flyers) were drafted prospects and expected to move on to main camps.

However, the Spitfires, who open the season in Sarnia on Friday, will now be without those three and likely overage goalie Joey Costanzo (Flyers), overage defenceman Wyatt Kennedy (Detroit Red Wings) and fourth-year defenceman Anthony Cristoforo (Dallas Stars). All three have turned rookie camp invitations into a spot at their respective NHL club’s main camp.
