SANTA CLARA — Brock Purdy will be back on the 49ers’ practice field Wednesday afternoon.

Purdy, who was inactive for the 49ers’ Week 2 game at the New Orleans Saints due to a toe injury , will return to practice on a limited basis, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said.

Shanahan added it's possible Purdy could serve as the backup for Sunday, when the 49ers have their home opener against the Arizona Cardinals at Levi’s Stadium.

Purdy sustained the injury to his right foot in the 49ers’ season-opening victory over the Seattle Seahawks on Sept. 7. He played the entire game, completing 26 of 35 passes for 277 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions in the 49ers’ 17-13 victory in Seattle.
