LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - Louisville has not had a juvenile detention center since 2019, when the city’s facility closed its doors due to a council vote and funding cuts.
State lawmakers set aside millions in 2023 towards the center’s renovations, and say it’s supposed to be finished next year. Now, metro council members hope that process can be accelerated.
During a public safety committee meeting Wednesday, Metro Council members passed a resolution urging Governor Andy Beshear to speed up the opening of the juvenile detention center in the Louisville metro.
They say among other things, it’s a public safety issue.
“We’re kind of in a spot where either youth is released in regards to these high crimes, or they’re sent to Adair County, a couple of hours away,” said Metro Councilmember Jo
