QUEENS, N.Y. (PIX11) — The New York City Department of Environmental Protection held a flood-preparedness town hall on Wednesday to help residents prepare for future storms, following several severe storms that have caused their homes to flood.
Erika Salah, who attended the town hall, said the frequent heavy rainstorms have flooded her home in the past, damaging her furniture.
“All the furniture, all the basement, everything,” she said. “The washer and dryer and everything.”
Salah joined dozens of Queens residents on Wednesday at the town hall, hoping to get answers on what’s being done to fix the problem. The DEP said New York City has seen its most severe storms in the past five years and that the sewer system was only built to handle less than two inches of rain an hour.
