LINN COUNTY, Oregon — The skeletal remains of a woman found in Linn County sat unidentified for nearly five decades, until now. The remains, found near Swamp Mountain in 1976, have been identified as Marion Vinetta Nagle McWhorter.

Oregon State Police (OSP) announced the major update on Tuesday, citing advances in forensic genetic genealogy for helping solve the cold case. McWorter, who was 21 years old at the time, was last seen at a Tigard shopping mall in 1974 and was never heard from again, OSP said.

On July 24, 1976, a moss hunter found a skull with several teeth in the area of Wolf Creek in Linn County. Investigators with the Linn County Sheriff's Office followed the moss hunter to the site and recovered additional skeletal remains. They also found a clog-style shoe, a fringed leat
