Union a disappointment in family’s time of need
My dad began working at General Motors Gear and Axle in Hamtramck, Michigan, in 1928. He worked there 36 years. He died at the age of 57 in 1964. He would have been 58 on March 12 of that year; he died Feb. 17.
My mother was told because he was not 58 when he died she would not receive any of the retirement money they had paid in all those years. It was less than one month. The union said he would have qualified for early retirement at 58.
I know unions are important, but this is one time the union failed.
