Several years ago, when challenges with a colleague reached their crescendo, my spiritual adviser asked, “With whom are you most angry?” Without missing a beat, I responded, “Myself.”
Silence ensued to the point that I began to think we had lost our phone connection. When he confirmed that he was still there, he shared that he knew that would be my response.
I asked what his response would have been if I had shifted the blame to the other party. He laughed and said, “I knew you wouldn’t. I knew you were most angry with yourself because you knew better than to let the situation continue to escalate.”
