The steering committee tasked with analyzing the proposed closures of two Pennsylvania prisons submitted its final report Wednesday, agreeing that the facilities are “appropriate for closure.”

The state Department of Corrections (DOC) said earlier this year that it expected to shut down the State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Rockview as well as the Quehanna Boot Camp. The closures are expected to save $100 million per year once the facilities are fully dispensed with, according to Gov. Josh Shapiro’s budget.

In its report, the DOC’s steering committee acknowledged testimony from citizens as well as from other state agencies that have raised the negative implications of closing the prisons.
