A scam is targeting residents with false claims of fundraising for the families of two officers murdered at Porepunkah.

Police said the scam was targeting the community in northeast Victoria and falsely claimed to be generating funds for the loved ones of late officers Neal Thompson and Vadim De Waart-Hottart.

The pair were shot dead while attempting to execute a sex offence-related warrant at a bus belonging to Dezi Freeman on August 26.

A third officer was injured.

A police spokesman said the calls were being made to people in the Alpine and Wangaratta regions.

"The male is purporting to be a police officer and is attempting to obtain donation packages ranging from $500 to $2500, with levels of business advertisement in return for each donation," a spokesman said.
