HOUSTON (KIAH) -- Food insecurity, unreliable access to enough food, is becoming a major problem in Houston, and BakerRipley, one of Houston’s largest nonprofit organizations, said it is seeing more older residents than ever before coming through its doors for daily meals.
“We’ve seen an increase in two sides. Seniors who would usually come to our sites once or twice are coming every week. They’re coming five days a week, and we’re also seeing new seniors joining us”, said Christina Cave, Director of Communications for BakerRipley.
Cave said the organization’s Senior Health and Wellness Centers give free lunch every weekday to those who sign up, and the meals are funded by the Harris County Area Agency on Aging. Seniors interested in enrolling for free lunches can sign up by visiting one
