CHICAGO (WGN) — An investigation by Chicago's Office of Police Accountability is underway on Thursday morning after officers opened fire on a knife-wielding suspect overnight.

According to police, the incident unfolded around 11 p.m. Wednesday, in the 5200 block of West Madison Street, in Austin.

Police say the incident began after officers in the area spotted a male offender who was allegedly carrying a large knife while "advancing toward civilians."

Officers instructed the suspect to drop the weapon, but when he allegedly continued walking toward officers, they deployed their tasers, which proved ineffective.

Authorities say as the suspect allegedly continued to make his way toward the officers, one of them opened fire, eventually striking him.
