An off-duty Broadview police officer wounded a man who was advancing toward a 64-year-old man with a knife in an alley Wednesday night in the Grand Crossing neighborhood, Chicago police said.

Shortly after 9 p.m., an off-duty Broadview officer saw a man in an alley in the 7300 block of South Langley Avenue who was armed with a knife approaching a 64-year-old man, police said. The off-duty suburban officer pulled out his weapon and wounded the suspect to the legs.

The wounded suspect fled the scene, but was caught a short time later and arrested. He was taken to UChicago Medicine where he was listed in serious condition, police said. The off-duty officer was treated by paramedics and taken to an area hospital for observation.

A knife was recovered from the scene.
