BAY CITY, MI – My grandfather was my first hero.
Everybody knew him as Art “Bus” Thompson, a scrappy baseball player from the first third of the 1900s, when city leagues and semipro teams thrived in Bay City.
I knew him as Grandpa and wanted to be just like him. And, now, I kind of am.
I held grandchild No. 3 in my arms for the first time this week, and what a thrill. Then I started thinking, how do I get these kids to idolize their grandpa the way I idolized mine?
I decided to begin mimicking Grandpa Thompson, starting with my preparation for these Bay City area high school football predictions. First, I went to the lavatory. Then I fetched an Altes out of the ice box, packed my pipe, tuned in the Tigers on my transistor and stretched out on the Davenport.
