Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chairperson Justice Annabel Mtalimanja has cautioned political parties against making premature declarations of victory, reminding them that only MEC has the legal mandate to announce official results.

Her warning comes after both the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) held press briefings, each claiming to be in the lead in the ongoing tallying process.

On Wednesday, MCP spokesperson Jessie Kabwila told reporters at the party’s headquarters in Lilongwe that the ruling party was confident of victory, predicting a win with over “70+1” of the vote.
