COLD SPRING, Wis. (WMTV) -A crash between an SUV and a semi tractor-trailer left two people dead Wednesday afternoon, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office reported Thursday morning.

The crash happened just south of Carnes Rd. in the Town of Cold Spring.

The preliminary investigation shows that the semi tractor trailer was traveling northbound on Highway N when it began to swerve into the gravel shoulder.

The driver then overcorrected into the southbound lane where the SUV was driving.

The driver of the SUV then tried to swerve to avoid being hit, but the trailer hit the car in the west shoulder.

When deputies arrived both the driver and passenger of the SUV were trapped in the vehicle.

They attempted to save their lives but were not able to. The driver and passenger were pronounced
