SAN JUAN COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) — Kirtland Air Force Base will be carrying out a prescribed burn sometime between Sept. 19 to Sept. 29, with the exact date dependent on weather conditions.

According to Kirtland AFB, the burn will be carefully managed by multiple agencies to minimize risk and maximize safety. Fire crews will start the burn early in the morning, and end it in the early afternoon. Smoke may be visible to local communities.

"KAFB has been conducting prescribed burns since 2018, directly reducing the chances of a wildland fire from occurring in areas that are vulnerable," officials stated in a news release on Thursday morning. "The season typically begins in the fall and ends around spring."

The burn will take place in remote, wildfire-prone areas of the base.
