A feasiblility study on a new dam and reservoir on the Belly River is expected to take several years

The Alberta government announced Thursday that a firm will look into whether it’s feasible to build a new dam and reservoir on the Belly River.

The province said it’s hired WSP Canada for the project, with the company also studying whether water flow between the Waterton and St. Mary reservoirs could be improved.

The proposed reservoir on the Belly River would be located about five kilometres northwest of Mountain View, a hamlet in Cardston County about 200 kilometres south of Calgary. The province says the project could improve water security, provide drought and flood resiliency, and support the aquatic ecosystem.

It’s expected that the studies will take several years to complete.
