LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Michigan House Democrats are set to introduce a package of 17 bills aimed at overhauling the state's landlord-tenant laws.

State Rep. Amos O'Neal, D-Saginaw, a sponsor of the "Tenants' Rights" legislative package, said the reforms would strengthen tenant protections and ensure fair housing practices.

The bills would allow courts to reduce rent or require landlords to pay damages if safety issues are not fixed promptly. They would also waive rent obligations when a property loses its certificate of compliance due to safety hazards, increase penalties for illegal lockouts, and revise the lease-ending process for survivors of domestic violence or stalking.
