BRAINERD — A lawsuit against Brainerd Public Schools alleges a civil rights violation pertaining to a lack of public information on the district’s Title IX coordinator and the process for reporting instances of sex-based discrimination and sexual violence.
Filed by 2020 Brainerd High School graduate Andrew Mendez, the lawsuit alleges the district has failed to properly publish required information on its Title IX coordinator, as Title IX requires school districts to designate a Title IX coordinator to receive reports of sexual discrimination, including sexual harassment.
The lawsuit, filed June 26 in U.S. District Court, stems from an incident in 2017, when Mendez said he was the victim of a sexual violence incident that he does not believe was properly handled by the district.
