PORTLAND, Maine — A recent multimillion-dollar grant from the National Institute on Minority Health Disparities aims to improve newborn health in rural Maine communities.

The grant will enable MaineHealth to enhance the technology used for training clinicians in newborn resuscitation.

Rural delivery teams do not get as much practice with resuscitation because of lower birth rates.

The funding will also support the use of augmented reality to enhance the realism of the training.

Allison Zanno is a neonatologist at Barbara Bush Children's Hospital. Zanno facilitated a demonstration to show how augmented reality helps train teams to resuscitate newborns at the Hannaford Center for Safety, Innovation, and Simulation at MaineHealth.
