The Nanaimo-Ladysmith School District 68 has reopened a public school that tells the story of the city’s changing demographics.

Rutherford Elementary School was closed in the summer of 2018 due to Nanaimo’s declining enrollment, but it reopened permanently this month, and more students are attending than officials expected.

On Thursday, Nanaimo-Ladysmith district officials marked the new chapter with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Rutherford School.

“It’s a reopening for the school, but it’s really a new school for us, and I know that I can probably speak for all the parents when I say it’s exciting to start new traditions with a new school and starting from zero,” said John Bradbury, president of the school’s Parent Advisory Council (PAC).
