BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- It’s a staple of local Basque cuisine – Pyrenees bread, an institution so old it predates the automobile.
Although you can’t get it in grocery stores anymore, you can get it in many local restaurants including at the Kern County Fair.
Three locally managed food booths at the fair are making their sandwiches and burgers on fresh baked Pyrenees bread and rolls. Pyrenees Bakery, based in east Bakersfield, has been a fixture in the Basque community since 1887, when it opened as Kern City French Bakery.
It changed its name to Pyrenees in 1945.
Pyrenees recently pulled its breads and rolls out of area grocery stores because the profit just wasn’t there anymore, but it’s still in local restaurants and delis – and that includes three places at the fair. Each of th
