WASHINGTON COUNTY, Tenn. (WJHL) - Washington County Mayor Joe Grandy spoke on East Tennessee State University's (ETSU) response of placing two employees on leave after they made social media comments regarding the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

Andrew Herrmann and Russell Brown were both placed on administrative leave pending further review after the university received complaints regarding social media posts made online about Kirk's death.

"I asked the university to take a stand and deal with the individuals involved in condoning the murder of an individual," Grandy told News Channel 11.

ETSU is currently investigating the matter, and the university remains committed to upholding standards of conduct for its employees.

Grandy said this matter goes beyond free speech.
