A former senior police officer who lied to the court ahead of the rape trial of Dragons player Jack de Belin has been handed a jail sentence.
The man, who can only be named using the pseudonym Officer A, pleaded guilty in February to one count of perjury in relation to evidence he gave a pre-trial hearing in 2020.
He returned to Wollongong District Court on Friday for sentencing, where Judge Christine Mendes imposed a term of imprisonment of one year.
However, Judge Mendes ruled that Officer A could serve his sentence in the community on an intensive correction order (ICO), meaning he would not spend time in custody.
Speaking outside court afterwards, Mr de Belin said the sentence was "a little bit light".
He was joined by his friend and one-time co-accused, Callan Sinclair, and sup
