SEATTLE — Home gardeners have only a few weeks left to shop at Urban Earth Nursery and Garden Service in Seattle’s Fremont neighborhood. The longtime nursery is closing in November.
A developer plans to replace the property with an eight-story apartment building that will include 130 units. The landlord says there is not enough space to keep the nursery and construction equipment. Rising rent costs also contributed to the closure.
“While I would love to reopen, the state of rent for retail in the city is roughly two to three times what we can afford,” co-owner Tan Gleason said in a video posted to Instagram.
The staff learned they’ll be out of work after Oct. 31 and the nursery’s last day is Nov. 1. Urban Earth has been told the location must be cleared out by the end of the year.
