MONTGOMERY, Ala. ( WSFA ) - Lawmaker safety is top of mind for elected officials from Washington, D.C. to Montgomery following the assassination of conservative political activist Charlie Kirk.
Alabama House Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter (R-Rainsville) said with lawmakers living in all corners of the state, this is a safety concerns for all Alabamians, not just elected officials who work at the State House.
“It really scares me that we keep it as safe as we possibly can because as we’ve seen just this last week, it just takes one person,” said Speaker Ledbetter.
He said last session, Alabama lawmakers added funding for additional safety measures at the State House and Capitol complex, but he said more can and will need to be done.
