An investigation is underway in Mission Beach after a bartender was stabbed at a steakhouse.

The attack took place around 2 p.m. on Thursday, according to San Diego police. Witnesses told responding officers that the suspect was initially on the beach and appeared to be under the influence.

After he was confronted by a bystander, the suspect walked into Moe's Steakhouse in the 3700 block of Mission Boulevard and stabbed the bartender seven times.

The bystander was following the suspect and stopped the attack by hitting the man with a rock, police said.

"Other people that work at the bar also stepped in and hit him with barstools — whatever they could find — to subdue him until the officers arrived several minutes later," SDPD Sgt. Kevin Stein told NBC 7.
