Americans are lonely. So lonely, in fact, that, in 2023, Surgeon General Vivek Murthy declared loneliness an epidemic that carried serious health risks.

Last year, the Making Caring Common Project, run by Harvard University's Graduate School of Education, released the results of a survey that concluded 21% of Americans are suffering from loneliness. Respondents were asked about various factors contributing to feelings of loneliness, and the highest response by a mile was technology, at 73%.

As has often been noted in this space, there's a paradox around technology, especially as it pertains to communication, whether that be social media, entertainment or even messaging apps.
