Private operators of New Mexico’s three immigrant detention centers are pushing back against a new civil rights report that calls for their closure, alleges due process violations, unsafe conditions and weak oversight.

The New Mexico Advisory Committee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights voted 7-2 in July to recommend shutting down the centers after conducting an inquiry into allegations of wrongdoing in court filings and watchdog reports. The committee’s findings , released last week, reaffirm efforts by advocates, lawmakers and Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham to end federal immigration detention in New Mexico, even as immigration enforcement efforts expand nationwide.
