The Northern Territory's attorney-general is facing backlash after failing to publicly declare a potential conflict of interest regarding a fatal hit-and-run driver before court.

Attorney-General Marie-Clare Boothby is related to Jake Danby, who was this week sentenced over hitting two Aboriginal pedestrians in Darwin and fleeing the scene .
One of the victims, referred to as Mr Whitehurst for cultural reasons, later died in hospital.
The court heard that after the crash Danby boasted about it, calling the victims "dogs" and "oxygen thieves" in texts to friends.
