Unwanted by Manchester United, England striker Marcus Rashford is making the most of his opportunity with European giants Barcelona.

On-loan signing Rashford proved the perfect replacement for Lamine Yamal in the Spanish club’s 2-1 win at Newcastle in the Champions League on Thursday.

With Yamal missing through injury, Rashford got a start on his return to England and scored both of Barcelona’s goals at St James’s Park. The second took the breath away, a piledriver from 25 metres into the top corner.

Barcelona boss Hansi Flick admitted he could not pass up the opportunity to sign Rashford when it became apparent he was not wanted at the Red Devils.

The German said: “When we had this chance, we said, ‘Okay, we have to do it’.

“I spoke with him before everything, going in the right way.
