The original tongue-and-groove hardwood floors in the “Pink Building” at 3080 Smallman St. in the Strip District feature telling details about its 150-year history.
Crescent-shaped dents from school desks and chairs mark the 60-plus years it served as Springfield Public School. Dark splotches and scratches that have been buffed out and smoothed down may be from its 12 years as a warehouse for the school district or from later on, when it served as the administrative building for its neighbor, Crucible Steel Co.
“The steelworkers used to walk across the street to this building to get paid,” said its current owner, Bonn McSorley. “There used to be a big Wells Fargo bank safe in here and that’s where they kept all of the cash.”
McSorley bought the building in 2000 for $575,000 from Bob Kwa
