Unconfirmed results from the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) indicate that Khumbo Kachali, leader of the Freedom Party (FP) and former Vice President (2012–2014), is returning to Parliament.
Kachali, who is also contesting the presidential election under the People’ Party with Joyce Banda, has reportedly secured 5,674 votes in the South-East region of Mzimba.
According to the same preliminary results, Kachali defeated James Nthala of United Transformation Movement (UTM), who garnered 3,690 votes; Raymond Nkhata, a former Democratic Progressive Party Party (DPP) Member of Parliament (MP), who received 5,133 votes; Lomathinda Mtema of the MCP, who obtained 2,249 votes; and independent candidate Shupekile Jere, who secured 2,539 votes.
MEC is is yet to confirm the results.
