CANTON, Mo. (WGEM) - Crews have begun installing a mooring cell just south of Lock and Dam 20.

The project will create a space for towboats to park while waiting for barges to go through the dam.

The project is being paid for by the Army Corps of Engineers and has been more than 20 years in the making.

Right now, tows must be parked several miles away from the dam.

“It’s designed to have towboats come up and tie off and shorten the waiting time between lockage’s because there’s not a lot of places they can wait and sometimes they have to wait two miles down river and then it takes another two hours for them the make the exchange and this is going to cut that down within forty-five minutes,” said Jim McDaniel, the Lock and Dam 20 lockmaster.
