The reigning Metro League champion Mountainside Mavericks (1-1) travel to Happy Valley Friday to face the upstart Nelson Hawks (2-1) in a nonleague clash between programs with postseason aspirations.

The Mavericks, coming off a dominant 35-0 shutout of Oregon City, will count on Washington commit Sam Vyhlidal ’s two-way prowess at linebacker and tight end to maintain momentum from last year’s quarterfinal run.

Nelson and standout defensive back Chaz Katoanga enter after grinding out a 17-14 road victory at Newberg last week. The Hawks continue their quest to challenge Central Catholic in the Mt. Hood Conference beginning next week.

Opening kickoff is set for 7 p.m. PT on Friday, September 19 with a live TV broadcast on NFHS Network .
