BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) - As waterfowl and upland bird hunting seasons begin across North Dakota, state environmental officials are warning hunters to steer clear of waterbodies that may contain toxic blue-green algae.

The North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality says the algae, which can appear in lakes and wetlands, may produce cyanotoxins harmful to both humans and dogs. Exposure can lead to symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, skin irritation, and in severe cases, seizures or death in pets.

Officials advise hunters to look for signs of algae blooms, which may resemble grass clippings, green cottage cheese, or spilled paint. Water affected by the blooms often appears bright green or turquoise.

Hunters are encouraged to check the state’s Harmful Algal Blooms Story Map
