MOUNTAIN BROOK, Ala. —

Electric scooters are growing in popularity across Central Alabama, and authorities in Mountain Brook want residents to be mindful of the laws surrounding them.

Under Alabama law, the scooter has to weigh less than 100 pounds, have a handlebar, and be powered by person or an electric motor.

Scooters are not allowed to be driven on sidewalks, and to use them on public roadways, riders need a tag and a valid driver license.

All traffic laws also apply to riders when they are on the road.

Parents are held accountable if their children do not have proper safety gear while using scooters, meaning they need to have helmets on while riding.
