In a significant escalation, three Russian MIG-31 fighter jets entered Estonian airspace on Friday morning without permission. This incident marks a troubling development in the ongoing tensions between Russia and NATO. The jets reportedly flew over the Vaindloo Island area, remaining in Estonian airspace for approximately 12 minutes.
Notably, the Russian aircraft did not establish two-way radio communication with local air traffic controllers, and their transponders were turned off during the incursion. This lack of communication has raised concerns among Estonian officials.
Estonia's Foreign Minister, Margus Tsahkna, condemned the violation, labelling it "unprecedentedly brutal." He stated, "Russia has violated Estonian airspace four times already this year, which in itself is unacceptable, but today's violation, during which three fighter jets entered our airspace, is unprecedentedly brutal."
In response to the incident, Estonian authorities summoned Russian diplomats to address the situation. Tsahkna emphasised the need for a robust response, asserting that "Russia's increasing border testing and aggression must be met with rapid reinforcement of political and economic pressure." This latest breach highlights the ongoing challenges faced by NATO members in the region as they navigate heightened tensions with Russia.
