WASHINGTON, D.C., USA — Maine’s congressional delegation is among a group of lawmakers urging federal officials to delay a new executive order requiring the government to eliminate paper checks.

The letter to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought was signed several members of Congress who represent New England:

Sen. Angus King, I-Maine

Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine

Jeanne Shaheen, D-New Hampshire

Rep. Chellie Pingree, D-Maine

Rep. Jared Golden, D-Maine

The lawmakers warned that the plan, set to take effect Sept. 30, could disproportionately affect older and rural Americans, as well as the domestic forest products industry.
