NORFOLK, Neb. (KCAU) — A woman was airlifted to a hospital in Omaha after being injured in an assault, the Norfolk Police Division reported Friday morning.

According to NPD, they were called to the 100 block of Gold Strike around 6:10 a.m. for a reported assault. Officers encountered a woman who was physically injured, and she was bleeding extensively. She was taken to a local hospital but then airlifted to an Omaha-area hospital. Her injuries are serious, but officials said they aren't life-threatening at this time.

NPD reported the suspect, Ryan Schmidt, 43, of Lincoln, had fled before they arrived. However, a Madison County deputy was able to apprehend him and charge him with first-degree assault, strangulation, and second-degree false imprisonment. Also, he had an active arrest warra
