A BC Ferries vessel is believed to have struck and killed a humpback whale off the province’s central coast earlier this week.
The company’s Northern Expedition vessel is believed to have crashed into the whale on Wednesday evening in Wright Sound, south of Prince Rupert.
“The incident was immediately reported to Fisheries and Oceans Canada, local First Nations, and marine researchers,” said BC Ferries in a statement Friday.
The next morning, around 10:30 a.m., BC Ferries says researchers found a deceased humpback whale in the area where the collision occurred.
Fisheries and Oceans Canada has been called and will lead the process on a necropsy of the humpback to determine its cause of death, according to BC Ferries.
“These situations are felt deeply by our crews and our company,” said
