The New York state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) on Friday released recommendations from a committee created to explore long-term changes to the state’s HALT Act as a result of the correction officer strike earlier this year.

The committee was formed from members of DOCCS, state Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association (NYSCOPBA) and other parties. The HALT Act originally went into effect in 2022, and aims to reduce the use of solitary confinement in prisons. Repealing or making major changes to the law was a primary demand from those on strike at prisons across the state in February and March.
