It’s migration time again, and the Bird Alliance of Oregon has issued a Lights Out alert for Friday, Sept. 19, 2025.

Why? Because 4.2 million birds are expected to be in the skies over Oregon during one night of peak migration season, which lasts through mid-October.

The number of birds expected to fly over Oregon dips a bit Saturday to 3.1 million, but then jumps again Sunday when projections say more than 5 million will fill Oregon’s night skies.

The AeroEcoLab issues the alerts using weather and atmospheric data to model bird behavior. AeroEcoLab also works with Cornell University’s BirdCast program, which tracks bird migration.

The Purdue AeroEco Lab offers projections for the number of birds migrating each night. Purdue AeroEco Lab
